Our idea of the right candidate:

Have a strong common sense, with analytical and critical thinking skills. Ability to speak their mind and explain reasons for clinical strategy proposed. Listen to needs and concerns of others with a willingness to accommodate strategy alterations, and supply information on the relative impacts (for example if the team wants to use RBM but it is actually more expensive than 100% SDV as the subject to site ratio is low and the CRF is not especially large).

Have a functional understanding of how assumption changes functionally impact across service lines. An understanding of each component of a clinical trial process. Don’t need to know everything, just some things most relevant to each operational group. How changes in things like timelines, treatment duration, follow-up duration, recruitment rates by country, CRF size, SAE rates, number of programmed edit checks, Bios T/L/G outputs, interim analysis inclusion, interim vs final CSR, site considerations, would impact across cross-functionally in the various operational groups.

Knowledge of how each operational step is influenced by the steps that run concurrent or preceding them. If your goal is a quality CSR for Regulatory purposes, you won’t succeed if there is a poorly designed protocol, or a poorly planned data management plan, clinical monitoring plan, or statistical analysis plan (as examples). The quality of the whole is the sum of the quality of the pieces.

Be a resource to the proposal and contract staff that you interact with in explaining why a particular strategy is proposed and things to be considered moving forward as changes in contracting with client and specific assumptions may change and their impacts. Those that are self-motivated can learn and apply appropriately in future situations via upskilling.
